Slow August: 31 Gentle Invitations to Savour Late Summer (+ Free Printable Calendar & Reflection Sheet)

Every year, when August arrives, I notice something begins to shift.

Perhaps it’s the teacher in me, but I naturally find myself thinking ahead. School uniforms, fresh notebooks, new routines and the return of familiar schedules begin to creep into my thoughts. Even if we’re still enjoying warm sunshine and long evenings, there’s a quiet feeling that summer is beginning to slip away.

This year is a little different for us. I won’t be returning to the classroom, and my children aren’t back at school until the very end of August, giving us a few extra weeks to enjoy the season together.

And it made me stop and think…

Why do we spend so much of August preparing for what’s next instead of fully enjoying where we are?

That’s exactly why I created this month’s Slow August printable calendar and reflection sheet.

Rather than rushing towards autumn or feeling sad that summer is coming to an end, this printable is simply an invitation to savour what’s still here.

The golden evenings.

The warm gardens.

The ripe berries.

The slower mornings.

The family meals outdoors.

The ordinary little moments that, so often, become the memories we treasure most.

Your Free Slow August Printable

This free printable includes two beautifully designed pages:

🌻 Slow August Calendar – featuring 31 gentle invitations to help you slow down and enjoy late summer.

📖 August Reflection Sheet – a collection of thoughtful prompts to help you capture the memories, gratitude and lessons from the month before September arrives.

These aren’t designed to become another to-do list.

You don’t have to complete every activity.

You don’t even have to do them in order.

Some people enjoy following the calendar day by day, while others simply pick whichever invitation feels right that morning.

The idea is simply to help you notice the beauty that’s already there.

Why Slow August?

August has its own unique character.

The days are still warm, yet somehow the light feels softer.

The countryside begins to change almost without us noticing. Fields of grain are ready for harvest, hedgerows are heavy with blackberries, gardens are overflowing, and evenings arrive just a little earlier than they did in June.

Rather than seeing those little changes as the end of summer, I like to think of them as reminders to appreciate the season even more.

Slow living has never meant escaping everyday life.

In fact, for me, it’s exactly the opposite.

Life is busy.

Families are busy.

Homes are busy.

Work is busy.

I know that’s true because it’s true in my own life too.

That’s why these daily invitations are intentionally small.

Some take only a minute or two.

Others might become an afternoon adventure.

None of them require a perfect schedule or endless free time.

They’re simply little moments that can be gently woven into an already busy life.

How I Use My Calendar

Everyone seems to use these printables a little differently, and I absolutely love hearing how they’ve become part of people’s routines.

Some readers print the calendar and display it on the fridge for the whole family to enjoy.

Others tuck it inside a planner or journal.

Some simply save it to their phone and glance at it whenever they need a little inspiration.

I’ve had teachers tell me they share the prompts with their classes.

Book clubs and church groups have used them as conversation starters.

Even college lecturers have told me they use them to encourage moments of reflection during particularly stressful times of the year.

Personally, I tend to choose whichever invitation feels right that day.

Sometimes I repeat the same one several times during the week because it’s exactly what I need.

The reflection sheet is just as flexible.

You might complete it at the beginning of the month as a way of setting intentions.

You might fill it in at the end of August with a cup of tea beside you.

Or perhaps you’ll use the prompts as inspiration in your own journal instead.

There isn’t a right or wrong way.

Simply choose whatever helps you enjoy the season a little more.
