6 Fantastic Christmas Song and Poetry Books for Kids - Our Little House in the Country6 Fantastic Christmas Poetry and Song Books for Children

1.  The Usborne Little Book of Christmas Carols – Number 1 on our list has been a firm favourite of mine for some time.  I have used it over the years with my students and now my own children love it too.  This book comes complete with a CD and includes many traditional carols such as Away in a Manger and The First Nowell.  It contains 29 carols, some very well known and one or two that may not be familiar.

2.  Disney Sing Along, 10 Songs from the Festive Season! – this very cute and Christmassy book and CD is perfect for Disney fans.  My children love this book as we have visited Disneyland at Christmastime so it reminds them of their time there.  This book features Mickey and friends singing 10 festive favourites such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Here Comes Santa Claus. A fun book and CD to get everyone in the mood for the Holidays!

3. Sing With Me this Christmas – this book includes 25 of the most beautiful Christmas songs.  Again, this book also comes with a CD.   The illustrations in this book, by Isabelle Charbonneau are gorgeous – colourful and perfectly pitched at younger children.  This book is a combination of carols and Christmas songs such as Silent Night, In The Bleak Midwinter, Do You Hear What I Hear? and Jingle Bells.  My 5 year old son absolutely loves this book and has listened to this CD every night at Christmastime for the past 3 years!

4.  My First Oxford Book of Christmas Poems – This beautifully illustrated book, compiled by John Foster, is a must have for your Christmas collection in my opinion.  Containing 67 wonderful poems and rhymes, separated into five categories – Christmas is Coming…, Deck the Halls with Sprays of Holly…, The Night Before Christmas…, On Christmas Day, On Christmas Day…, and We Three Kings of Orient Are.. – there is a poem for all aspects of the festive season.  The works of many famous authors and poets make up this wonderful compilation, including A.A. Milne, Clement C. Moore, Thomas Hardy, among others.

5.  Poems for Christmas – if you are looking for a book of poems for children to learn at Christmas or to simply read to them at bedtime over the holidays then this book compiled by Jill Bennett and illustrated by Ian Beck is just the thing!  16 traditional and newer rhymes and poems are appeallingly presented in this book.  A really lovely selection to add to your Christmas library.

6.  Christmas Poems – Jill Bennett has also compiled this perfect first collection of poems for Christmas.  The book is delightfully illustrated by Nick Sharratt.  A favourite of ours from this book is “School Carol” a funny take on “Deck the Halls”, set in a classroom in the run up to Christmas.  This book also includes the work of many famous authors including Julia Donaldson’s hilarious “Santa Claws”.

Have you any song or poetry books that you would recommend for families to enjoy together?

Enjoy!
