Why I’m Keeping a Summer Reading Journal This Year

A gentle way to savour the stories that shape your summer

There is something about reading in summer that feels completely different from reading at any other time of year.

Perhaps it’s because the pace of life softens just enough for us to settle into a story. Perhaps it’s the long evenings, the open windows, lazy afternoons in the garden, or those quiet moments by the sea or beside the pool while everyone else is happily doing their own thing. Whatever the reason, I’ve always found that the books I read during summer stay with me a little longer.

Years later, I might not remember exactly when I read a particular novel, but I’ll remember where I was. I’ll remember sitting beneath an umbrella in France with a cup of coffee beside me, reading in the garden while the bees hummed through the lavender, or curling up in my favourite armchair on a rainy summer afternoon with the windows open just enough to hear the rain.

Somehow, the memories of the place become woven into the story itself.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve started keeping a summer reading journal.

Not because I want to analyse every book I read or turn reading into another task to complete. Quite the opposite. I want to slow down enough to remember it. To notice the little thoughts that arrive while I’m reading, the sentence that made me pause for a moment, the character I couldn’t stop thinking about, or the page that made me quietly close the book for a few minutes just to sit with what I’d read.

Reading has always been one of the gentlest forms of slow living for me. It’s one of the few things that asks nothing more than my full attention. No multitasking. No rushing. No trying to achieve anything. Just sitting still long enough to disappear into somebody else’s world for a little while.

Keeping a reading journal feels like a natural extension of that.

It’s not about recording every detail. It’s about paying a little closer attention. About noticing how a story made me feel. About remembering where I was when I read it. About building a little collection of books that shaped one particular summer of my life.

Years from now, I know I’ll enjoy looking back through those pages.

Not simply to remember the books themselves, but to remember the season.

The weather.

The places.

The slow mornings.

The long evenings.

The little moments that surrounded each story.

Because books have a wonderful way of becoming part of our memories.

This summer, I’ve created a simple Summer Reading Journal to accompany those moments.

It’s a gentle printable designed to help you record the books you read, the thoughts they spark and the memories you make along the way.

Whether you’re reading one book or twenty, I hope it encourages you to slow down and savour each one a little more.

For years, I thought a “good” summer meant making the most of every minute — filling the calendar, planning memorable days, creating magical moments, and trying to hold everything together for everyone else.
