10 Simple Ways to Enjoy a Summer Morning at Home
There’s something about a slow summer morning that feels different.
The light arrives earlier, softer somehow, stretching gently across the house before the day has properly begun. The world feels quieter. Slower. As though it hasn’t quite woken up yet.
And for a little while, if we let it, we can stay in that space.
For me, slow summer mornings have always held something special. Perhaps it comes from years of working within the school calendar — knowing that for a few short weeks, there was no rush to be anywhere early, no packed mornings, no pressure to get out the door.
Even now, they still feel like a small gift.
Not because they’re perfect or particularly productive — but because they offer something we don’t always get during the rest of the year: a little extra time, a little extra light, and the chance to begin the day more gently.
And it doesn’t have to be anything elaborate.
It’s not about 5 a.m. routines or perfectly curated mornings. It’s simply about creating a little space to breathe before the day takes over.
So here are 10 simple ways to enjoy a slow, calm summer morning at home — small, realistic ideas that can help you start the day in a way that feels good.

1. Wake up just a little earlier (if you can)
Not dramatically earlier, not to “get more done,” but simply to give yourself a pocket of quiet before the day begins. Even an extra twenty minutes can make the morning feel entirely different.
2. Open the windows and let the air in
There’s something about fresh morning air that instantly lifts a space. Opening the windows, drawing back the curtains, letting the light in — it’s a simple way to welcome the day in.
3. Step outside first thing
If the weather allows, take your first few minutes of the day outdoors. A cup of tea, a breath of fresh air, a quiet moment in the garden — it doesn’t need to be long to feel grounding.
4. Make a simple, refreshing drink
Something light and gentle — herbal tea, lemon water, or your usual morning coffee. It’s not just about the drink itself, but the act of slowing down long enough to enjoy it.
5. Keep your morning screen-free
Resist the urge to reach for your phone or turn on the noise straight away. Let your mind wake up slowly, without the rush of information or distraction. Even a short screen-free window can make a big difference.
6. Choose quiet or gentle background sound
Instead of news or busy chatter, opt for something softer — music, a calming podcast, or even just silence. It helps keep that peaceful feeling in place a little longer.
7. Move your body gently
This doesn’t have to be a full workout. A short walk, a stretch, or simply stepping outside and moving around can help you feel more awake and present.
8. Write things down instead of reaching for your phone
If your mind is already busy, take a few minutes to jot things down — thoughts, plans, to-do lists. It clears your head without pulling you into screens or distractions.
9. Keep breakfast simple and fresh
Summer mornings lend themselves to lighter, easier meals — fruit, yoghurt, toast, something quick but nourishing. It’s less about what you eat and more about keeping things easy.
10. Let the morning unfold slowly
Perhaps the most important of all — not rushing straight into the day. Giving yourself permission to move at a slightly gentler pace, even if the rest of the day ends up being busy.
A summer morning doesn’t need to be perfect to feel special.
It doesn’t need a strict routine or a long list of things to tick off. More often than not, it’s simply about noticing what’s already there — the light, the quiet, the feeling of a new day beginning.
And even if the day ahead is full, or busy, or slightly chaotic…
Starting it slowly can change everything.

- The Summer I Stopped Trying to Do EverythingFor years, I thought a “good” summer meant making the most of every minute — filling the calendar, planning memorable days, creating magical moments, and trying to hold everything together for everyone else. But somewhere along the way, summer became another thing to manage rather than experience. In this reflective essay, I share what changed after burnout, stepping away from full-time work, and spending slower days in France with my family. It’s a deeply personal piece about emotional exhaustion, motherhood, invisible mental load, nervous system calm, and learning to stop trying to optimise every season of life. This is a gentle reflection on slow and intentional living, ordinary summer joy, family rhythms, and the quiet freedom that comes when we stop trying to do everything and simply allow ourselves to live more slowly and fully. Perfect for readers drawn to seasonal living, mindful motherhood, slow summer rhythms, emotional wellbeing, simple living, and creating a calmer, more intentional life.
