A January of Intentions, Not Resolutions
Gentle guidance for a calmer, kinder start to the year
The Soft Beginning
January begins not with fireworks for me, but with a hush.
The decorations are packed away, the days are still short, and the kettle hums while a candle flickers on the counter.
The world around me might be shouting about resolutions, but everything inside me is whispering, slow down.
Everywhere we turn, there’s talk of self-improvement — diets, challenges, new routines, “new year, new you.”
And yet, the season itself tells a different story.
Outside, the garden is resting. The trees are bare. Nature is still gathering strength beneath the frost.
Maybe we’re meant to do the same.

Why Resolutions Rarely Work
For years, I made resolutions that didn’t stick.
I promised I’d exercise daily, stay organised, eat better, wake earlier.
And for a while, I did.
But somewhere between the dark mornings and busy evenings, I’d slip back — and the guilt that followed felt heavier than the winter rain.
Resolutions are often built on pressure: the idea that we must fix ourselves.
But what if we don’t need fixing?
What if we simply need direction, not discipline?
That’s where intentions come in.
What Intentions Offer Instead
Intentions are different.
They’re not rules to follow — they’re gentle anchors that guide how we live.
They’re flexible, forgiving, and grounded in what truly matters.
Where resolutions focus on outcomes — lose weight, save money, do more —
intentions focus on how we want to feel as we move through the year.
A few examples:
- To move my body with joy, not punishment.
- To protect my peace and choose calm.
- To make time for small moments of creativity.
- To nurture my home as a place of rest and warmth.
- To live seasonally and notice the beauty of ordinary days.
Intentions allow space for change. They grow with us as the seasons do.
How to Set Gentle Intentions
Setting intentions isn’t about goal-setting or lists. It’s about reflection.
Here’s a soft way to begin:
- Reflect: Look back at the year that’s passed. What felt heavy? What brought ease?
- Choose your words: Pick one or two words that capture how you want to feel — maybe peace, connection, or clarity.
- Visualise your rhythm: How do you want your days to flow?
- Keep it visible: Write your intentions on a card beside your desk, your journal, or your fridge.
- Revisit gently: Check in with yourself through the seasons. Adjust as life shifts.
Intentions are not a checklist — they’re a compass.
A Seasonal Perspective
Living seasonally reminds me that everything has its time.
January is not the season for blooming. It’s the season for rooting.
For gathering our strength quietly beneath the surface.
We rest now so that, when the light returns, we have something to offer the world again.
So if you feel slow, tired, or unmotivated this month — that’s not failure.
That’s wisdom.

This year, instead of asking “What will I achieve?”
I’m asking “How do I want to live?”
Maybe that’s the real promise of January — not a race to change ourselves,
but a chance to begin gently, with warmth and intention.
hay soon,
Ciara x
