How We Create Calm in the Chaos
Bringing a Little Wonder Back to the Everyday
Simple Habits and Slow Rituals to Re-Center Your Home and Heart
Some days, it feels like the house is a whirlwind. The dishes stack up, everyone’s talking at once, and even the cat wants something. But somehow, in between it all, we’ve found ways to create calm in the chaos — and even bring a little wonder — back to our everyday. If your home life feels a little full at the moment — a bit loud, a bit messy, a bit much — you’re not alone.
August can be a strange little stretch of the year. There’s still the laid-back looseness of summer, but also the whisper of routines returning, lists creeping in, and that feeling of “I should probably get my act together” humming quietly in the background.
This post is for that space. The middle ground between summer and September. The ordinary days with full sinks, full baskets, and full hearts too.
Because I believe we can create calm in the chaos. And even more than that — I believe we can bring back a little wonder to the everyday. Not in a sparkles-and-fairy lights kind of way (though no judgement if you love that and I loooooove fairy lights – have them inside and out all year around), but in the way we notice our lives. In the way we set gentle rhythms, choose small comforts, and leave space for soft moments to rise.
So here are some of the ways we’re doing that in our house right now. Simple habits to create calm, followed by small rituals that add a little wonder back in. No pressure. Just a few ideas to meet you where you are.
PART ONE: Creating Calm in the Chaos
Practical habits and home rhythms that keep things ticking over (without the overwhelm)
These are the quiet things that help life run more smoothly behind the scenes. The kind of habits that take 10 minutes here and there but make everything feel more manageable. They don’t look glamorous — but they work.
1. The 3–3–3 List
Each night, I jot down 3 things I must do tomorrow, 3 things I should do, and 3 things that would just be nice. It helps keep expectations realistic and gives me permission to let the less urgent things wait.
2. The Sunday Basket
We keep one box for all the paperwork, receipts, post, forms, and bits that float around the house. Once a week (usually Sunday), I go through it with a cup of tea. It’s not exciting, but it stops things slipping through the cracks.
3. A Midweek Cosy Dinner
Wednesdays are often a bit of a slump day, so we anchor it with a comfort meal. It doesn’t have to be fancy — just something warm and familiar. It gives the week a softer middle.
4. The Drop Zone
Having one place where things land — keys, bags, headphones, sunglasses — saves so much stress. Ours is a basket by the front door. It’s not pretty, but it saves at least three arguments a week.
5. Fridge-First Meal Planning
Before doing a food shop, I check the fridge and plan at least two dinners from what we already have. It reduces waste, saves money, and stretches the time between big shops.
6. The 10-Minute Tidy
Choose one surface — the kitchen table, the bathroom counter — and give it a 10-minute reset. Just one. It’s amazing how one tidy space can set the tone for the whole house.
7. Themed Evenings (lightly!)
We don’t stick to this rigidly, but having a general rhythm like laundry on Mondays or admin on Thursdays gives the week a gentle shape.
8. A Protected “No Plans” Pocket
We try to protect one chunk of the week — a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon — with absolutely no plans. Nothing scheduled. Just space for pottering, resting, or doing absolutely nothing.
9. Screen-Free First and Last 15 Minutes
I leave my phone in the kitchen overnight. Those first 15 minutes in the morning and last 15 at night feel softer and clearer when I’m not already scrolling.
10. A Morning Anchor
Not a full routine — just one kind habit to start the day. It might be lighting a candle, opening the window, or sitting outside with a coffee. Something that says: this day starts gently.

PART TWO: Bringing a Little Wonder Back to the Everyday
Rituals, rhythms and gentle joys that remind us life is more than just ticking things off
This is where the magic lives — not in big gestures or perfectly styled moments, but in the small ways we notice our lives again.
11. Light a Candle at Breakfast
Especially in the darker months — or grey August mornings — it’s such a gentle way to set the tone for the day. Even if everyone’s half-asleep and someone’s running late, the flicker of light feels like a warm hug.
12. Keep a Family Playlist
Each season, we add songs to a shared playlist. Everyone in the house gets a say. It plays during dinners or car rides or while we tidy. It becomes a soundtrack to our everyday life.
13. Step Outside (Even for Five Minutes)
Whether it’s standing on the patio with a cup of tea or walking up the lane, being outside — even for a little while — resets everything.
14. Play “Find the Wow”
This one started with the kids, but I still do it myself. Look around and call out one thing that makes you go “wow”. The sky, the butter on toast, the cat being a maniac. It invites joy in the middle of the mundane.
15. One-Line-a-Night Journal
Not a full journaling session — just one sentence. Something funny, something good, something worth remembering. Over time, it becomes a little treasure trove of ordinary magic.
16. Midweek Mocktails (or Hot Chocolate)
On a random Tuesday or Thursday night, I’ll make something “special” — even if it’s just lemonade with frozen berries and a stripey straw. It breaks up the week and feels like a tiny celebration for no reason at all.
17. Create a Cosy Corner
It doesn’t have to be picture-perfect. Just a chair with a blanket, a little table with a candle, somewhere to land for a few quiet minutes. Everyone in the house needs one.
18. Say What Was “Enough”
At the end of the day, I try to finish the sentence: “Today was enough because…” It’s a quiet way of shifting from “what didn’t I get done?” to “what did I live through, notice, appreciate?”
19. The Tea Break Reset
Make a hot drink. Take three slow breaths while the kettle boils. Ask yourself: what’s the next kindest thing I can do? It’s a way to re-centre in the middle of the mess.
20. Add the Fairy Lights
They’re not just for Christmas. Fairy lights in the hallway, the kitchen, the kids’ bedrooms — they add warmth and whimsy to even the most ordinary corners. And when the days start to draw in? Even better.

Final Thoughts
Creating calm doesn’t mean controlling everything. And bringing back wonder doesn’t mean every day has to be beautiful or peaceful or perfect.
But it does mean we get to choose where our attention goes. It means we can build little habits that help life feel steadier. We can soften the edges of our days, even if the middle is still a bit messy.
So if you’re feeling a little untethered this season — start small. One habit. One ritual. One moment of noticing something lovely before it passes you by.
You don’t need a whole new routine. Just a gentle return to what matters most.
Sending warmth and steadiness from our little house to yours,
Ciara xox
