Letting Go of Perfectionism & Making Home Your Own

Letting Go of Perfection

Letting go of perfection is one of the most freeing shifts you can make—especially when it comes to homemaking. In a world full of perfect-looking homes and curated routines, choosing a more intentional, realistic way of living can feel both radical and refreshing. This post is about embracing the imperfect home, finding beauty in real life, and creating a slower, more meaningful rhythm at home that doesn’t rely on perfection to feel good.

I didn’t always know that. In fact, for a long time, I thought I had to keep everything looking “just right.” The kitchen had to be clean before I could relax. The cushions fluffed. The clutter cleared. I’d rush to do it all, thinking then I could sit down, rest, breathe.

But what I’ve come to realise—slowly, gently, over time—is that perfection is rarely the path to peace. Quite often, it’s the opposite.

We’re surrounded by messages that tell us our homes need to look a certain way. Minimalist. Beige. Curated. Spotless. Even warm, cozy spaces often come with a sense of being just a bit too styled. And we scroll through it all, wondering if we’re falling short because we haven’t lit the right candle or stacked the right coffee table books.

But here’s the truth I’ve found, and maybe you have too:

Homes are meant to be lived in.

They’re not meant to be styled within an inch of their life. They’re meant to be full of life.

What does letting go of perfection look like?

  • It might look like sitting down with your cup of tea while the breakfast dishes are still on the counter.
  • It might look like a laundry basket that stays in the hallway for a few days too long.
  • It might be dust on the skirting boards and a to-do list that’s nowhere near done.
  • It might look like a fridge covered in magnets, school notes, and shopping lists—messy, chaotic, real.

It’s not about giving up. It’s about shifting focus.

From how things look to how they feel.
From impressing others to supporting ourselves.
From curating a moment to living inside it.

This blog, this house, this life—it’s all real

I started this blog, and my Instagram account, because I love noticing the little things. The cozy moments. The corners of peace. But I never meant to create a version of life that felt unachievable. I share what I love, what brings me joy, what feels good in our home.

And yes, we live in a home we love. It’s newly renovated, but only because of a massive leak. It’s full of things we’ve collected slowly. It’s not full of high-end pieces or designer finds—it’s full of character, colour, comfort. And plenty of LEGO. It works for us.

This life isn’t about aesthetics. It’s about meaning.
It’s about mornings with the dog curled up in the chair, or the children building a LEGO street in the corner of the kitchen. It’s about a home that holds all of it—the mess, the beauty, the laughter, the overwhelm, the everyday.

A word to the skeptics (I see you)

I know that for some, this still might look curated. Too calm. Too styled. Too perfect.
But it’s not. And I hope, gently, to show that here.

Yes, I share the peaceful moments—but only because I seek them out in real life, not just for the camera. I don’t tidy the whole house before I take a photo. Sometimes I don’t tidy it at all. I just find the corner that feels soft in that moment. That feels true.

And that’s really what this blog is about:
Living an intentional, meaningful, and realistic life—not a perfect one.

Letting go, gently

Letting go of perfection doesn’t mean letting go of beauty.
It means recognising that beauty can exist alongside the mess. That life can be full of joy and still look a bit chaotic around the edges.

It means sitting down anyway.
Lighting the candle anyway.
Opening the door anyway.

Letting go of perfection is making peace with your real, actual life—and learning to love it.

Not someday. Not when it’s tidy.
But now.

So here’s to crumpled throws, laundry in the hallway, and your favourite cup of tea beside the clutter.
Here’s to homes that feel like us—not homes that impress strangers.
Here’s to being done with perfect.
