Slow and Intentional Living

A Home That Feels Like Me

Have you ever walked into a space and instantly felt something? A deep exhale, a familiar warmth, a sense of belonging? That’s home—not a building, not a style, but a feeling.

It’s the way a space holds us. The way it welcomes us back after a long day. The way it reflects who we are, not just in the way it looks, but in the way it makes us feel.

And that feeling? It has nothing to do with perfection. It has everything to do with comfort, connection, and the life we live within these walls.

This has been something I’ve carried with me for years, but it’s my son who put it into words best. He’s always said, “Home is wherever we all are together.” And that sentiment has stayed with us through so many chapters of life—camping in a tent, travelling in our camper van, and even in more difficult times when we had to move out of our house for two years due to major renovations after a major leak caused significant structural damage.

Was it ideal? No. But we made a conscious decision as a family: home wasn’t just the physical place we had to leave behind. It was us. And even in that temporary space, we found ways to make it feel like ours—because home is about belonging, not just bricks and mortar.

So let’s talk about what it truly means to have a home that feels like you.

Home is a Feeling, Not Just a Place

A home that feels like you isn’t just about the things in it. It’s about the way it makes you feel the moment you walk through the door. It’s the relief of stepping inside after a long day, the warmth of a space that holds memories, the ease of being in a place where you don’t have to perform or impress—just be.

For you, home might feel like:

✨ The quiet hum of the kettle boiling as you settle in for the evening.

✨ The familiar creak of the floorboards, the scent of fresh coffee in the air.

✨ The way your pet greets you at the door like you’ve been gone for years.

✨ The comforting mess of real life—a book left open, a throw blanket always within reach.

It’s not about having everything perfectly styled. It’s about creating a space that feels safe, comforting, and yours.

👉 Reflection prompt: When was the last time you felt completely at home in your space? What was happening in that moment?

Home as a Refuge: The Place We Can Just Be

The world outside can be chaotic, overwhelming, and exhausting. But home? Home should be the one place where we can shut the door and exhale.

It’s the space where we don’t have to be anything but ourselves.

Where we let go of expectations.

Where we are surrounded by the people (or pets!) who make us feel safe.

Home is where we laugh until we cry, where we curl up when we need comfort, where we celebrate, grieve, dream, and simply exist. It’s the soft place to land when the world feels too much.

And no matter where life takes us, home is something we carry with us. My family learned that firsthand when we had to leave our house for two years during renovations. It wasn’t easy. The children weren’t exactly thrilled about it. But we made the decision together—home isn’t just a place; it’s something we create.

We found little ways to make that temporary space ours—our routines, our meals, our little inside jokes that made even unfamiliar walls feel like home. And even though we longed to return to our actual house, the truth remained: home was where we were together.

👉 Try this: Think about a time when you had to make a space feel like home, even when it wasn’t ideal. What did you do to make it feel more you?

Letting Go of the ‘Perfect Home’ Ideal

We’ve been sold this idea that a “good” home looks a certain way—styled, curated, spotless. But the homes we love the most? They aren’t perfect. They are lived in.

A home that feels like you isn’t about impressing anyone. It’s about creating a space where you feel at ease.

🌿 If you love simplicity and minimalism, let your space reflect that—not because it’s trendy, but because it brings you peace.

🌿 If you love layers of cozy textures, embrace them—even if it doesn’t match a magazine spread.

🌿 If your home is ever-evolving, that’s okay! Your space should change as you do.

A perfect home isn’t one without flaws. It’s one where you can sit down at the end of the day and exhale.

Practical Ways to Make Your Home Feel More Like You

So how do we actually do this? How do we create a space that reflects us without feeling overwhelmed?

1. Surround Yourself with What You Love

✔ Keep the books you love out where you can see them.

✔ Display personal photos, art, or mementos that hold meaning.

✔ Bring in textures and colors that feel good to you.

👉 Try this: Walk through your home and remove 3-5 things that no longer feel like you. Replace them (or leave the space open!) with something that aligns with who you are now.

2. Create a Sensory Experience

✔ Find a signature scent for your home—candles, essential oils, fresh herbs.

✔ Pay attention to textures—soft blankets, natural wood, cozy rugs.

✔ Think about sound—do you love background music? Silence? The hum of a kettle?

3. Design Spaces for How You Actually Live

✔ If you love reading, create a cozy reading spot.

✔ If you host often, focus on creating an inviting gathering space.

✔ If you need calm, add soft lighting and uncluttered areas.

👉 Alternative idea: Instead of designing your home around what it should look like, try designing it around how you want to feel.

A Home That Feels Like You is the One You Love Coming Back To

At the end of the day, a home that feels like you isn’t about decor trends or following rules. It’s about creating a space where you feel safe, loved, and at ease.

It’s about the familiarity of the couch that’s shaped to your body just right, the way your kitchen smells in the morning, the knowing that—no matter how messy or imperfect—it’s yours.

My son’s words have always stayed with me: Home is wherever we all are together.

And isn’t that the truth?

👉 What’s one thing in your home that makes you feel safe, comforted, or like you?

Ultimately, home isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s about creating a space where we can show up exactly as we are, where life unfolds in all its beautiful, messy, imperfect moments. A home that feels like you is one that holds your stories, your memories, your comforts. It’s the place that welcomes you back—no matter what kind of day you’ve had—with open arms and familiar warmth.
