What Does Homemaking Look Like in 2025? (Hint: It’s Not What You Think)

Homemaking Has Changed—So Why Does It Still Feel Outdated?

There was a time when the word “homemaking” conjured up a very specific image—pearls, perfectly polished floors, elaborate dinners waiting on the table. But let’s be real: That’s not our life. That’s not the world we live in.

And yet, for many of us, the idea of making a home—creating a space that feels warm, safe, and truly ours—still matters.

So, what does homemaking actually look like in 2025?

Spoiler: It’s not about Stepford Wives or Pinterest-perfect aesthetics. It’s about something much deeper—and much more real.

A few years ago, I mentioned the word ‘homemaker’ in conversation, and I could almost hear the record scratch.

You mean, like a housewife?” someone asked, eyebrows raised.

It made me laugh because, in their mind, homemaking was all aprons and vacuuming in heels. But for me, it was about something completely different—it was about creating a home that felt lived in, loved, and intentional.

The funny thing? Even I used to have my own outdated perceptions of homemaking—until I stepped back from my career and started seeing it for what it really is.

1. Homemaking in 2025: It’s About Creating a Life, Not Just Managing a House

For modern women in midlife, homemaking isn’t about housekeeping—it’s about creating a life that feels good.

We’re balancing:

✔️ Careers (or, like me, stepping back from them to focus on home for now)

✔️ Parenting teens (which is a completely different ballgame from parenting little kids)

✔️ Running a home in an era where life feels busier than ever

✔️ Trying to carve out time for ourselves in between it all

I used to think of my home in terms of tasks—the never-ending list of things that needed to be done. Dishes, laundry, school runs, meal planning—it was all about staying on top of things.

But one day, I caught myself rushing around wiping countertops while my family was sitting on the couch laughing at something on TV. And I thought—what am I doing?

I was so focused on keeping everything ‘just right’ that I was missing the whole point.

From that day, I started asking myself:

Is my home supporting my life, or am I just constantly trying to keep up with it?

That changed everything.

Homemaking today isn’t about keeping up appearances. It’s about intention—shaping a home and a lifestyle that works for you, your family, and your current season of life.

2. Forget the Perfectly Polished Home—Let’s Talk About a Home That Feels Good

We’re bombarded with curated images of “perfect” homes.

But here’s the truth: A home doesn’t have to be Instagram-worthy to feel good.

💡 What actually makes a home feel good?

• A space where you can breathe (not one that feels cluttered and chaotic).

• A home that reflects who you are now, not just who you used to be.

• Simple daily rituals that make life feel a little softer, a little slower, a little more joyful.

One of my favorite moments in my home isn’t when everything is spotless.

It’s when the kitchen is messy after baking with my kids.

It’s when the living room is full of blankets and books on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Those are the times when home feels the best—not when it looks Instagram-perfect, but when it feels lived in, warm, and safe.

💡 Quick Reflection:

📝 Think about your home right now. What’s one small thing that always makes you feel at ease? A favorite chair? A candle? The way the afternoon light hits your kitchen?

3. Slowing Down Without Falling Behind

One of the biggest struggles midlife women face is the guilt of slowing down.

We’ve been conditioned to believe that resting is lazy and that a successful home is one where we’re constantly on top of everything.

But busyness does not equal worth.

🏡 Homemaking in 2025 is about intention over perfection.

✨ It’s about choosing what actually matters and letting go of the rest.

📌 Try This: Instead of creating a to-do list today, make a “let it go” list. Write down three things you’re allowing yourself to not stress over in your home.

4. Creating a Home That Works for Your Life (Not the Other Way Around)

The beauty of homemaking in 2025 is that you get to decide what works for you.

💡 Ask yourself:

• Does my home reflect who I am now, or is it stuck in a past version of me?

• Does my space support the kind of life I want to live?

For years, we had a playroom at the far end of the house—a designated ‘kid space,’ tucked away from the main living areas.

But in reality? The kids barely used it.

They wanted to be near the kitchen, near the heart of the home.

So, we did what made sense for our family—we took an unused bedroom near the main living area and turned it into a gaming and hangout room.

A space where they could have their independence, but still be connected to the heart of the home.

And that old playroom? It’s now our master bedroom, complete with a new bathroom.

Because that’s the thing about home—it should change as life changes.

5. The Homemaker of 2025: She’s You, She’s Me, She’s Every Woman Making Home Her Own
