Embrace Cozy Living: Tips for Slowing Down This Autumn
As the world seems to move faster every day, I’ve found myself craving stillness and warmth. Autumn is the perfect season for slowing down—there’s something about the crisp air and cozy evenings that makes me want to press pause and just *be*. Cozy living isn’t just about soft blankets and candles (though those are definitely a part of it); it’s about embracing intentional moments of calm and finding joy in the slower rhythms of life.
Today, I’m sharing a few simple ways I’ve been practicing intentional slowing down this season, and how you can too!
The Importance of Slowing Down
In our fastpaced world, we’re constantly “on”—whether it’s through our phones, work, or an endless todo list. I’ve been there myself, feeling like I need to do *all the things*, and it’s exhausting. But here’s something I’ve learned: *slowing down is selfcare*.
A few months ago, I hit a point where I was juggling too much. I wasn’t really *present* for any of it, and I knew something had to change. That’s when I started practicing slow living—and let me tell you, it’s been a game changer.
Key Benefits:
- Mental Health: Slowing down can significantly reduce anxiety and stress. Taking a step back allows us to reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings. For me, even something as simple as a few deep breaths during a busy day helps me reset.
- Present Moment Connection: Slowing down lets us appreciate the little things—a warm cup of tea, the way sunlight filters through the window, or the sound of leaves crunching on a walk. These small moments can bring so much joy.
- Mindfulness and SelfCare: Cozy living aligns with mindfulness, encouraging us to pause, breathe, and take care of ourselves. I’ve started incorporating brief moments of mindfulness into my day—whether it’s while cooking or simply sitting outside and watching the leaves Autumn.
Studies have shown that mindfulness and taking intentional pauses can improve mental clarity, reduce stress, and increase overall wellbeing.

Creating Cozy Spaces for Slow Living
One of the first things I did to slow down was create a cozy nook in my home. It’s a small corner by the window with soft pillows, a chunky knit blanket, and my favorite Autumn Scented candle. It’s become my sanctuary, where I go when I need to unplug and recharge.
Your environment plays a big role in how you feel. When your space is cluttered or chaotic, it’s harder to relax. But when your home feels cozy, it’s easier to settle into slower rhythms.
Tips for Creating Cozy Spaces:
- Use Soft Lighting: Soft, warm lighting—whether from candles, string lights, or lamps—creates a peaceful ambiance. I love lighting a candle as soon as the sun starts to set, signaling the transition to a quieter evening.
- Add Warm Textures: Think blankets, pillows, and throws in earthy tones like browns, oranges, and creams. I’ve also started layering different textures like wool, faux fur, and linen to make my space feel extra inviting.
- Designate a Slow Living Nook: Whether it’s a chair by the window or a corner of your bedroom, find a spot where you can sit quietly, read, or journal. This doesn’t need to be fancy—just a space that feels peaceful to you.
- Declutter Regularly: Decluttering has been so freeing for me. I’ve realized that a tidy space makes it much easier to relax. Start small by decluttering just one area at a time, and you’ll feel lighter in no time.

Simple Daily Rituals to Slow Down
One of the best ways I’ve found to slow down is by incorporating small, intentional rituals into my day. These don’t have to be time consuming, but they can make all the difference in how you feel.
- Morning Mindfulness
My mornings used to be rushed, but now I’ve started taking a few extra minutes to savor them. I make my tea, sit by the window, and just *breathe*. No phone, no distractions—just a few minutes to center myself before the day begins.
Action Step: Try starting your day with 5 minutes of mindfulness. It could be drinking your morning coffee slowly, sitting quietly, or even stretching before you get out of bed.
- Slow Cooking
Autumn is the perfect season for slow cooking. There’s something so soothing about chopping vegetables, stirring a pot of soup, or baking something with cinnamon and apples. It’s become a form of meditation for me.
Action Step: Plan one or two slowcooked meals each week. Maybe a hearty soup, roasted vegetables, or even a batch of homemade bread. The key is to enjoy the process, not just the result.
- Mindful Walks
I’ve started taking short walks around my neighborhood in the afternoons. I focus on the sound of the leaves crunching under my feet, the crisp air, and the changing colors of the trees. It’s such a simple act, but it’s grounding and reminds me to appreciate the present.
Action Step: Next time you go for a walk, leave your phone at home and focus on your surroundings. Notice the sounds, the smells, and how your body feels as you move.
- Evening WindDown
One of my favorite slow living rituals is my evening winddown routine. After dinner, I light a candle, take a warm bath with Epsom salts, and settle in with a book or my journal. It’s the perfect way to transition from the busyness of the day to a peaceful night.
Action Step: Create your own evening routine. It doesn’t have to be complicated—maybe it’s just a warm bath or sitting with a cup of herbal tea before bed. The key is consistency and intention.

Cultivating Mindfulness Through Slow Living
Mindfulness is at the heart of cozy living. It’s about being fully present in whatever you’re doing, whether that’s cooking, walking, or simply resting. When I’m mindful, I notice more—the taste of my food, the feel of the air, the sounds around me.
Key Points:
- Present Moment Awareness: One way I practice mindfulness is through *mindful eating*. Instead of rushing through meals, I try to savor each bite. It’s amazing how much more enjoyable food becomes when you’re fully present with it.
- Mindfulness in Daily Activities: Washing dishes, folding laundry, or even sweeping the floor—these can all be opportunities to practice mindfulness. I focus on the physical sensations of the task, and it becomes less of a chore and more of a meditative act.
- Self Compassion Practices: I’ve started keeping a gratitude journal where I write down three things I’m grateful for each day. It’s a simple way to bring more positivity and mindfulness into my life.

Embracing Seasonal Rhythms
One of the most beautiful aspects of Autumn is how it naturally encourages us to slow down. As the days get shorter and the weather cools, there’s a sense of turning inward, resting, and reflecting.
Key Points:
- Autumn’s Invitation: I’ve been spending more time outdoors this season, just watching the leaves change and breathing in the cool air. Autumn invites us to slow down and appreciate nature’s rhythms.
- Seasonal Foods and Traditions: I’ve been cooking with seasonal ingredients like squash, apples, and pumpkins, which not only tastes great but helps me feel more connected to the season.
- Action Step: Try cooking one or two seasonal recipes this week. Maybe roasted squash or a cozy apple crisp. Savor the process of preparing the food, and share it with loved ones if you can.
- Seasonal Activities: Whether it’s taking a nature walk, baking something warm, or decorating your home for Autumn, these small seasonal traditions help us slow down and connect with both ourselves and nature.
