Cornstarch / Cornflour Dough Pumpkin Hanging Decorations
Cornstarch dough is the perfect dough for making decorations to hang on a tree. These cute little pumpkins are great for this time of year to add an autumnal feel plus they are perfect for Halloween and Thanksgiving too!
We have a plain white tree/branch in a tin bucket in our home all year round. As the seasons change we change the decorations on it. Currently we have the clay autumn leaves we recently made hanging on it as well as some fabric fall coloured leaves, but we felt it was lacking a little something! So, we decided to make cute little pumpkins to hang on it too. We have used this same recipe to make Christmas decorations in the past, all that changeS are the colours and shapes!
Recipe:
- 2 cups corn flour or corn starch
- 2 cups salt
- 1 – 1.5 cups of hot water
- Orange paint of food colouring
Method:
- Bring the water and salt to the boil (just 1 cup, you can always add more!)
- Mix in the cornstarch and paint/food colouring.
- Mix into a dough, add more water if needed.
- Knead into a smooth ball – should be a lovely smooth, silky and soft dough.
- Roll out using rolling pin.
- Cut out pumpkins shapes using a pumpkin cookie cutter.
- Punch a hole for the ribbon by passing a drinking straw through the pumpkin near the top of the decoration
- Lay out pumpkins on a sheet of baking paper on a cookie tray.
- Cook on a very low heat for about 90 minutes. Alternatively this dough will also air dry.
- Pass a ribbon through each hole to hang the decorations!
Hang on a twig or hook and enjoy!!!!

When you say to cook on very low heat, what temperature would you recommend?
I definitely want to do this… I might go for a Thanksgiving theme!

What a wonderful idea! For several years now my daughters and I have made Baker’s Clay Christmas Tree Ornaments for family and friends every Christmas. I absolutely LOVE the idea of the plain tree branch and decorating it for the different seasons/holidays as I always decorate my entire home. I also think your recipe might be better than the Baker’s Clay so I am going to give it a try. Quick question though, I wasn’t able to find the oven temperature at which to bake them at. Thanks for sharing your fun family project!

Mine just are not turning out right, I don’t know what I am doing wrong. Can you help me?
I boil the salt and the water but then it just doesn’t all mix when i add the starch. How long am i supposed to boil the salt and water? Can you give me a step by step? thanks

Hi Rebekah, sorry it didn’t work. I just tried making a quick batch without boiling the water and that worked really well so it may be worth trying that or another great method I’ve used for little hanging ornaments is: add 2 cups of baking soda, 1 cup of cornflour and 1 cup of water in a pot and gently heat while stirring constantly until forms a dough- gives a gorgeous smooth dough to work with. Definitely try using cold or warm water for the original recipe though and hopefully that works. Thanks so much for getting in touch and hope you have more success next time 🙂
