A Fabulous Spring Morning at Ardgillan Castle, Skerries, Co. Dublin, Ireland – A Great Place to Visit With Kids
This morning was a gloriously clear and sunny Spring morning, a little chilly at first but perfect for getting out and about. Ardgillan Castle in Skerries Co. Dublin is only a short spin from our home and we regularly head to the playground there at the weekends. It is a beautiful 18th Century house, stunningly beautiful gardens and parkland overlooking the Irish Sea. There are tearooms, picnic areas, a brilliant playground and gorgeous walks, see the Ardgillan Castle website here.
As it was such a gorgeous morning today, we decided to take a walk through the demesne and not just head for the playground and I’m so glad that we did. We blew dandelion clocks, chased butterflies, hunted for the Gruffalo in the woodland, explored little paths, examined fallen trees and their roots and played in the playground. I think the photos tell the tale of our adventure. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, I would highly recommend paying this magical place a visit!
Chasing butterflies, blowing dandelion clocks, running wild, playing tag!
I am amazed at how adventurous they are both becoming. Oodles(2) is a climber, she never stops going and is completely fearless, I was thrilled to see how agile and confident she has become on the playground equipment, preferring the bigger pieces rather than the tot’s apparatus. I try to allow them as much freedom as possible when they are playing at the playground, lending a helping hand if needed and staying close but not too close allowing them space to explore and expand their horizons! Doodles(4) has always been a cautious child but recently we have noticed him becoming much more intrepid!!!! There is a huge climbing pyramid made of ropes and he made a really great effort at climbing up it plus he scaled a cargo net and walked across a rope bridge 2 metres off the grounds – a first for him! Really proud at how much he is pushing his comfort zone limits out!
We spotted a trail through woodland and lots and lots of bluebells and decided to explore. Oodle’s thought that it was the perfect place to go searching for a Gruffalo. Every so often she took off after her dad and Doodles to save them from the Gruffalo lurking in the bushes!!!!!! We have had some really bad storms over the winter months so we came across several fallen trees. Doodles and Oodles were fascinated by the size of the trees lying on the ground and Mr G really enjoyed explaining to them about the roots that were now visible.
The final part of our walk was all up hill and I was amazed that they both managed it with little or no complaint. They began to get quite tired but both succeeded in making the whole adventure on foot.
I hope you enjoyed another one of our outdoor adventures, let me know if you any recommendations of where else we could explore!

We had a country park where we lived in the UK and would go Gruffalo hunting there when the boys were little – I wonder if Julia Donaldson could ever have imagined what she was unleashing when she wrote The Gruffalo! Such a fabulous book!

It’s amazing, my 2 are mad about it. My youngest is only 2 and she is tiny, our tiny tornado and she is convinced that she turns into the Gruffalo when we go into the woods and runs around growling and roaring!!!! Thanks for visiting!

Wow, wish I would have seen this before we visited Ireland a couple years ago. We didn’t have kids with us so I don’t have any recommendations for Dublin. Our favorite place in Ireland was Galway.
